Logging Scars in the Tongass

9x11 inches, 2022

Polyester plate lithograph and watercolor

I’ve been longing to hear the croaking ravens in the rain, nibble the salmonberries, smell the scavenged salmon on the creek banks, and feel the cycle of all lives whirling all around. Yet, as far from Southeast Alaska and the Tongass National Forest as I am right now, that’s pretty impossible. I cannot put the beauty and complexity of this place on paper. I certainly cannot paint a pretty picture of a logging road, much less hope that the ecosystem around it will continue to flourish, to function, to sustain. Eating into the heart of places like Prince of Wales island are clear cuts and logging roads. The stumps of old growth cedars, hemlock and spruce remind us what is lost to foreign corporate extractive industry.
